2015-16 Chair's Messenger Article Nov '15

Full Steam Ahead!

Well, we’re well and truly into the swing of things now! After the roaring success of the Launch Party, the FELT Launch and our October Halloween Social all went down in a similarly splendid fashion! This is turning out to be a particularly ambitious year for MTSG and I’ve every confidence the excellent and incredibly hard-working committee will deliver nothing but excellence. We’ve got a Ski Trip coming up, our Winter Ball and we’re even hosting the inaugural Inter-JLD Sports Trophy competing against a number of Junior Lawyer Division groups in various sports (and of course, MTSG which is proudly and perhaps uniquely independent).

Winter Ball

The event we have all been waiting for - MTSG's Winter Ball to kick off the season of debauchery and goodwill. The Ball will be held this year at the Museum of Science and Industry on 26 November 2015. Invites for the event will now have already been circulated. Provided we’ve not already sold out by the time this article goes to print, you had better move quickly to secure your places!

Inter-JLD Sports Trophy

Although the name is something of a working title, Sports Directors Shalina Bhatia, Ryan Brown and Kris Scales are in the process of organising a huge sporting event for the MTSG and similar organisations in the North of England. We will have 100+ participants from various trainee solicitor groups and Junior Lawyer Division groups all competing in Manchester in Spring 2016. Watch this space for further details over the coming months…If you have any contacts or suggestions that may assist in the organisation of this event, please contact Kris.Scales@slaterheelis.co.uk.

Our extremely hard-working Education Directors Joe Ailion and Rachel Forbes have launched into an extremely interesting and useful programme of career-enhancing opportunities for MTSG members. October saw members attend a Pro Bono & Employability Fair and a careers presentation at Manchester Metropolitan University and a Humanities Law School seminar at the University of Manchester. We will be attending a Q&A Panel in November at BPP. We’ve been inundated with volunteers and at the moment are fully-booked for these events but please check our Twitter, website and regular MTSG update emails for details of other opportunities coming your way which you can use to develop extra-curricular skills and enhance your CV!

MTSG’s charity fundraising got off to a tasty start with our decision to combine our Halloween Social with a bake sale at our Halloween Social; Cake and free drinks – what’s not to like! We will be raffling off some fabulous prizes at our annual Winter Ball on 26 November. We have a number of other fundraising events planned throughout the year, including a 24-hour cycle-a-thon and completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks in the new year. We’re really excited about supporting our chosen charities and we know we can count on the always excellent support of our members to support the very-deserving, Forever Manchester and British Heart Foundation.

If you’ve any queries about getting involved just let me or the other MTSG committee members know!

Martin Bloor,

MTSG Chairman
