2016-17 Chair's Messenger Article Apr '17

The MTSG St. Patrick’s Day Social was held on Thursday 16 march 2017 in Waxy O’Connor’s.
Attendees were welcomed with some Irish-themed props, drinks tokens and a huge food buffet.
In addition, our guests were entertained by a live Irish traditional music band, setting
our attendees up for a weekend ahead of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. We would like to
say a massive thank you to the sponsor of the event, SJC Legal.
Please keep an eye on your email inboxes and our social media platforms for details of the
next MTSG social event.

Bongos Bingo is the word on all FELT-ers lips as we anxiously await new dates to be released
for the crazy bingo event at Albert Hall. This is to be sponsored by Think Legal and more
info will be released very shortly!
Our gin tasting session is also looming – to be held at Atlas Gin Bar, Deansgate. BCL will
be sponsoring a night of gin-history and (hopefully quite large) samples will be tried and
tested as the FELT-ers become gin experts! This is set to be a fantastic evening and one
not to be missed! Tickets will be on sale shortly! Watch this space!
MTSG Gets Pampered
On Thursday 23 March 2017, various MTSG members were invited to an evening of pampering at
Kiehl’s, Manchester in aid of one of our chosen charities for this year, Save the Children.
Attendees were treated to complimentary cocktails (provided by Be At One), mini spa
treatments, Kiehl’s vouchers, a mini fashion show by Hobbs, a business card raffle and a
charity raffle.

A fantastic night was had by all those that attended and we would like to thank all those
that did attend in helping raise money for Save the Children. If you would like to hear
more about the fund-raising efforts of MTSG and how you can get involved, please contact
our Charities Director, Heena Kapadi (Heena.Kapadi@slaterheelis.co.uk).

NQ Talks
This month, the MTSG’s Education Directors have worked with Realm Recruit in hosting MTSG’s
second qualification talk. This talk focused on the impact technology is having on the legal
marketplace and the opportunities it can create for newly qualified solicitors. We would
like to thank Realm Recruit for providing an incredibly useful presentation and a thoroughly
enjoyable evening. The third and final qualification talk is due to take place on Thursday
6 April 2017 at BPP University, Manchester. The qualification talk is being hosted by
Chadwick Nott and will provide advice and guidance on the qualification process with a
special focus on relocation when qualifying. This will include an overview of the NQ markets
in London and other UK cities (including Birmingham, Leeds and Bristol) as well as advice
from Chadwick Nott's own specialist international recruiters on the opportunities available
abroad on qualification.
The District Judge Shadowing Scheme is now ‘live’ and will run from the end of March until
May at the Manchester Civil Justice Centre. This scheme enables MTSG members to spend a full
day at the Civil Justice Centre working alongside a District Judge and observing hearings
on a range of civil disputes. This is a fantastic opportunity to interact with District
Judges and see how the courts work behind the scenes.
We are currently in the process of arranging specialised education opportunities for our
paralegal membership. In particular, we are looking to run a training event in April/May
which will provide tips and advice on securing training contracts, paralegal career paths
and exploring alternative routes to qualification. If you would like to hear more about our
education events, please contact Education Directors, Grace Matthews
(Grace.Matthews@tp.co.uk) or Alasdair Jones (Alasdair.Jones@dwf.law).
