Faces Old and New
First, I would like to congratulate all current and previous members of MTSG that have recently qualified or started new jobs during September. Second, I would like to send out a massive welcome to all those new trainee solicitors and paralegals in Manchester – we look forward to meeting you all at our events throughout the year and it is an exciting time to be joining the legal sector in Manchester. If you have still not received one of our MTSG welcome packs, then please email one of our General Secretaries, firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com and they will be able to assist.
The MTSG Committee are underway with the various events planned for the year – numerous venues have been booked, entertainment has been lined up and sponsorship has been secured. Again, I would to thank all of our new and current sponsors for the interest they have shown in this year’s MTSG calendar.
MTSG Launch Party
The first MTSG event of the year is our MTSG Launch Party at the newly-opened and exclusive venue, Menagerie, which is due to take place on Thursday 06 October. The MTSG Launch Party is promised to be one of the biggest events on the MTSG calendar and we look forward to seeing some fresh faces. For the year ahead, our Social Directors plan to arrange unique events and provide like-minded legal professionals with the opportunity to network in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. There are plenty of ideas in the pipeline, including combining social and sporting events. Watch this space! A huge thank you in advance to Seraphina Wilkins, Loretta Woollams and Georgina Anwyl for all their hard work in organising the Launch Party.
FELT – For The Smaller Trainee Intake
FELT, F(ewer) than E(ight) or L(ess) T(rainees), aims at getting trainee solicitors together who may not get the same opportunity to network with other trainee solicitors in the work environment. This year’s FELT Launch Party, organised by our FELT Director, Alex Herbert, is due to take place late in October at the Red Door, Deansgate (details to follow). With free drinks, offers on cocktails and prizes to be won, it looks to be a great night, and a perfect way to kick-start this year’s FELT events.
Following the FELT Launch Party, our FELT Director has lots of exciting events planned within the Manchester area, including cocktail making, gin tasting and a night at the infamous Bongo Bingo! A great schedule for what will be a promising year of FELT activities.
Is there a better way to get through the dark cold nights of October other than booking a holiday? The MTSG doesn’t think so, which is why we have organised the MTSG Ski Trip! Come and join us in Val Thorens between the 7th and 14th January 2017. For only £600, you will get return flights from Manchester, overseas airport transfer, 7 nights self-catered accommodation and a 6-day resort ski pass. Does it sound like this is for you? If so, please contact our Activities Director, Chris Berry, at firstname.lastname@example.org – but you best hurry as places are limited and we have already received a great deal of interest! Don’t forget that this trip is not only available to MTSG members, so if you have friends that ski/board, please feel free to spread the word.
Save the Children and Forever Manchester
The MTSG has chosen Save the Children and Forever Manchester as its chosen charities for this year. Our first charity event of the year, organised by our Charities Director, Heena Kapadi, is due to take place on Wednesday 19 October at the Clarins Concession within House of Fraser, Deansgate. Each attendee will be greeted with a glass of prosecco and a Clarins goody bag made up of 5 samples. Clarins will provide a 20-minute demonstration consisting of skincare and make up advice, followed by 4/5 different pamper stations for everyone to enjoy.
Attendees will then have the opportunity to make purchases and for every item purchased, you will receive a raffle ticket for the raffle draw at the end of the evening. Tickets for this event will be available shortly. If you have any particular ideas for fundraising activities, please email our Charities Director, Heena Kapadi, at email@example.com.
Throughout September and October, we will be busy attending law and career fairs, putting the MTSG name out there for the trainees of the future and answering questions they may have about law firms, training contracts and generally offering a word of advice. We will be supporting BPP University, The University of Law, The University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University and University of Salford in their respective mentoring schemes and assisting them throughout the year with their careers events. This year, we will be offering numerous volunteering opportunities; to include the District Judge and Coroner’s shadowing schemes and we will be working closely with Deans Court Chambers to provide advocacy training events for members.
The new year will bring in further events and exciting opportunities as we will be looking at organising the NQ talks and events for members approaching qualification, however, we will also be arranging events tailored to our paralegal members. These events will focus on securing training contracts and alternative routes in the legal profession, such as CILEx. We have also been liaising with fellow young professionals from different professions with a view to arranging a young women in business networking event in the new year – watch this space! If you have any comments or suggestions for education opportunities you would like MTSG to provide, then please email one of our Education Directors, firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com.
We do love a good pun…
Our Marketing Director for this year, Sophie Burrows, has already demonstrated her love of puns as well as her ability to provide the MTSG audience with numerous laughs on our social media platforms. I would encourage all MTSG members to follow us on Twitter (@mcrtsg) or join our Facebook group (MTSG 2016/17). We will announce all our events on Twitter and Facebook, and provide you with the opportunity to sign up to all MTSG events throughout the year.
