Messenger Article – April MTSG
Menagerie Charity Spectacular:
On Wednesday 25th April 2018 MTSG hosted a charity spectacular at Menagerie in Spinningfields to raise money for one of our charities of the year, Forever Manchester. It was a fantastic evening full of fun, with live entertainment throughout the evening, as well as food and drink provided for all attendees. The proceeds of all ticket sales were donated directly to the charity. A big ‘Thank You’ to the event sponsor, Hays Legal, for supporting this event and helping us to raise funds for this brilliant cause.
‘Let’s Play Bingo’:
The FELT social at Bongo Bingo sold out in record time when tickets went on sale in early April. The event, held on 26th April 2018 at The Albert Hall was very kindly sponsored by Think Legal Recruitment. Attendees were treated to pizza and drinks before the bingo games started. Brilliant feedback has been received regarding this event – it is safe to say MTSG will be looking at making a return visit to Bongo Bingo in the not too distant future!
For many of our 2nd year trainee members, qualification dates are looming. In recognition of this, the MTSG have been working with our recruitment firms in the North West to provide some useful guidance in how to approach qualification and the search for NQ jobs.
On 22nd March BCL Legal hosted the first of the NQ events, with speakers Joy Kingsley (JMW) Tom Bridgford (Eversheds) and Colette Withey (EY) giving an insight into life as a NQ solicitor in each of their firms. The event was very useful for our members in considering the different types of law firms in Manchester, and how the different types of law firms and practice areas may appeal to them going forward in their career.
Realm Recruit hosted the second NQ event at Irwin Mitchell’s Manchester office. Duane from Realm was on hand to help dismiss some common misconceptions about securing NQ roles, and provide advice as help with the NQ job search, providing information on the state of the jobs market and salaries, best practice for composing a CV, and ‘personal branding’. Also present to provide advice and share their stories to where they are in their career to date were a number of NQs from Irwin Mitchell, as well as Megan Christie, Head of Court of Protection at Linder Myers.
The final NQ talk, hosted by Think Legal, took place on 19 April. Think Legal answered questions and queries from our members at this interactive event, with topics covered including common misconceptions when applying for NQ jobs, hints and tips for applications, access to practice material and finding the ‘right job for you’.
Feedback from our members in relation to this year’s NQ events has been very positive and our members have found both the advice given from recruiters, and the stories shared by our peers in the legal sector, very helpful and insightful in what can be a very daunting time for trainees in the approach to qualification. Thank you to everyone who has contributed towards the organisation and successful running of these events.
